The mission of Volunteer Services Department is to embrace the Mission, Vision, and Values of Saint Joseph HealthCare by providing and maintaining an adequate number of volunteer and services to supplement the work of paid staff in delivering service and care that exceeds the expectations on our patients, their families and the communities we serve; and to ensure our volunteers meaningful work and the opportunity to learn and grow as individuals.
Description:
Saint Joseph Hospital is a 446 bed facility and offers the highest quality patient care to the communities of central and eastern Kentucky. Saint Joseph, also known as Lexington?s ?heart hospital? has pioneered many firsts in the health care community. Saint Joseph has also been nationally recognized for treatment in the areas of cardiology, orthopedics and stroke, by U.S. News and World Report, Solucient and HealthGrades. Saint Joseph East, a 166-bed community hospital, offers a wide array of services including a comprehensive women?s health program consisting of the Saint Joseph Breast Care Center and maternity and OB/GYN services. Saint Joseph East also houses Lexington?s only after-hours pediatric emergency center, Kid Traxx. In 2003 and 2004, Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East were each recognized as a distinguished hospital for patient satisfaction and service excellence by J.D. Power and Associates.
History:
History of Saint Joseph HealthCare On October 2, 1877, a small group of Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Kentucky led by Sr. Euphrasia Stafford, arrived in Lexington to staff the city's first hospital. In just a few months, the decision was made to move from the Linden Walk/Maxwell Street location to West Second Street, where Saint Joseph remained until moving again in 1959 to its current location on Harrodsburg Road. On December 1, 1998, Saint Joseph East, formerly Jewish Hospital Lexington, joined Saint Joseph HealthCare, Inc. Today, Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East are members of Catholic Health Initiatives. Saint Joseph's associates, physicians and volunteers are empowered to carry out the health care ministry started by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Our hospital's friends and benefactors continue to be remembered daily in prayer and service by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
