The East Seventh Street Center is dedicated to improving the quality of life of children, families, and residents of Census Tract 3 in Lexington who are affected by poverty.
Description:
Kids' Café -- serving hot, nutritionally balanced meals to children at-risk for hunger. The Center was the pilot location of this program in Lexington, and has served thousands of meals since 1999.
Kolpek Computer Lab -- a public computer lab puts neighborhood residents in touch with technology. Offering modern workstations, high speed internet access, office/productivity software, printers, scanners, the lab is a much used resource.
Homework Help -- students have access to trained tutors, helpful adult volunteers, and educational resources in a safe, quiet setting that is close to home.
The neighborhood in which the Center operates is described in the 2000 US Census as having a high school graduation/GED rate of less than 50%, and a per capita income of just over $11,000 per year -- both much lower than other areas in Lexington-Fayette County, Kentucky, and the nation.
History:
Located at the corner of East Seventh Street and Elm Tree Lane, the East Seventh Street Center has operated since 1999. Purchased and rehabilitated in 1998 with the mission of serving the surrounding community, the building was formerly the site of a neighborhood restaurant, the Green Lantern.
The East Seventh Street Center is a program of Repairers Lexington, founded in 1994 as a grassroots nonprofit organization.
