The Christian Appalachian Project strives to assist people in the Appalachian region of Eastern Kentucky to become self-sufficient. The Volunteer Program focuses on service, family-style living, and prayer. Volunteers can serve in over 30 human service programs, including adult education, elderly services, housing, child and family development centers, family advocacy, programs for people with disabilities, educational and recreational programming, summer camp, and other professional placements.
There are several time commitments that volunteers can choose from. Long-term (9 months of service or longer)and short-term (2 weeks - 8 months) volunteers must be 18 years or older. Groups (serving 1 week) of 3-10 people (14 years or older) serve in our housing and home repair program, or assist with other CAP programs.
History:
The Christian Appalachian Project is an interdenominational organization, which was founded in 1958 by Rev. Ralph Beiting, a Catholic priest. CAP was officially incorporated in 1964. Volunteers have been an instrumental part of CAP since the very beginning.
CAP began as a mere dream of Fr. Beiting's, and he started assisting people in Appalachia with only the money in his pocket and the help of his family. Local high school and college students began volunteering their time to help Fr. Beiting, and over time, more programs began to emerge. In the last 40+ years that CAP has been a part of Appalachia, approximately 40,000 volunteers have helped inspire and strengthen the people of eastern Kentucky.
