The Mission of the Shalom Zone Eviction Prevention Services is to provide residents of the Shalom Zone: Irishtown, Davis Town, Speigel Heights, Pralltown, and Thompson Addition; with financial assistance, advocacy, education, and referral to prevent eviction and to promote stability in their housing situation.
Description:
The General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church has designated the project area affected by the Newtown Pike Extension and Redevelopment Plan in Lexington, KY as a Shalom Zone for International Communities of Shalom Initiative. A Shalom Zone is defined as "a geographic area within a community (of Shalom) where churches collaborate with residents, businesses, institutions, and community organizations to transform the systems and conditions that affect people's lives.
History:
Since the designation, there have been several work groups formed within the local Shalom Initiative to address a variety of conditions that affect the lives of those within the Shalom Zone. This work group will strive to develop ongoing programs that will provide services to assist residents with their current housing needs and to prepare them for transition into the new housing and redevelopment planned for the area. The Shalom Zone Eviction Prevention Services is a systems change that will address current housing situations.
