Scouting operates through volunteer leadership. Volunteer unit leaders are an example of Scouting's principle of service to others. Naturally, parents are a primary source of leaders in the Scouting program. You volunteer not only to serve Scouting, but also to serve your son and his friends, and to have the chance to be a positive influence on the youth in your community. What Do You Receive in Return? Being a leader is fun, challenging, and rewarding. Leaders find experiences help them to become a better parent. The following are some dividends that will enrich your life as you dedicate your time, talent, and enthusiasm to Scouting. Fun and fellowship with other families, sharing your pride in the boy's accomplishments. The privileges of helping to enrich and strengthen families. A chance to help boys learn good citizenship and help shape them into men who have strength of character and are sensitive to the needs of others. The opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of boys as they grow strong in mind and body. A code to live by which will set a worthwhile example for both boys and adults. The satisfaction of being a member of a worldwide movement, and pride in being publicly identified, as part of this organization---wearing the Scouting uniform is a visible means of showing you believe in and stand up for the ideas and objectives of the Boy Scouts of America.
Programs of the Blue Grass Council, BSA are very volunteer driven. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, and Exploring units need volunteers to serve in variety of leadership positions as well as to assist in activities from Cub Scout day camps to Boy Scout Camporee's and summer camp staff positions on a time limited basis. District committees provide support directly and technical assistance to the operation of the district. The executive board and committees of the board provide opportunities for short term and long term involvement in Scouting. Volunteer leaders, both men and women, are involved in the Scouting program. They serve in a variety of jobs - everything from unit leaders to chairmen of the pack/troop/venturing/exploring committees, committee members, cubmasters, den leaders, merit badge counselors, and chartered organization representatives. The applicant must possess the moral, educational, and emotional qualities that the Boy Scouts of America deems necessary to afford positive leadership to youth. The applicant must also be the correct age, and subscribe to the Declaration of Religious Principle, and abide by the Scout Oath or Promise and Scout Law. All leaders must be 21 years of age, except assistant Scoutmasters, assistant den leaders, assistant Cubmasters, assistant Webelos den leaders, and assistant Varsity Scout coaches, who must be 18 years or older. If volunteering in any Scouting program they must complete an adult application and submit to a criminal background check and become registered with the Boy Scouts of America. Each applicant must complete the training courses related to the program being applied for.
