At the Best Friends Day Center, volunteers serve as best friends to persons with memory loss. Best friends work under professional supervision and work one-on-one with program participants in a variety of activities designed to bring out the best in the person with memory loss. Some of these activities include music and singing, art expression, group exercises and games, intergenerational activities, and various other therapeutic and reminiscence activities. Best friends help the participants feel loved, connected, and appreciated. In return, volunteers often receive more than they give. The Best Friends Day Center is open Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM, and volunteers are needed for all shifts.
All volunteers complete an hour-long orientation/training prior to the first volunteer shift. Volunteers with on-going client contact are required to complete a TB skin test. A criminal background check is also required. Children ages 12 and under are required to be accompanied by an adult. Best Friends Day Center is located inside Second Presbyterian Church on the corner of E. Main St. and Ransom Ave. Across the street is Kerr Brothers Funeral Home. Parking to the church is behind the church or on Ransom Ave. The entrance to the center is on Ransom Ave. and is the entrance closest to the back of the church. A sign reading "Helping Hand" is posted by the entrance. The entrance door is locked so volunteers will have to ring the doorbell. |
