Lawyers for Children America recruits, trains and provides ongoing support for attorneys to represent child in abuse and neglect cases in juvenile court.
Description:
Lawyers for Children America is dedicated to servicing abused and neglected children by working to create positive outcomes through effective legal advocacy. To accomplish our mission Lawyers for Children America recruits committed lawyers from law firms, corporate legal departments, and other legal institutions to offer pro bono legal services on behalf of children who enter the child welfare system due to abuse and neglect. LFCA provides its attorneys with comprehensive training and the on-going support. LFCA has a partnership with the Yale Child Study Center that provides additional support for the volunteer attorneys. Currently we receive cases from courts in Hartford, Rockville, Middletown, New Haven and Bridgeport.
History:
Lawyers for Children America began as a pilot program in Hartford, Connecticut under the leadership of current LFCA Board Chairman Zoe Baird, then senior vice president and general counsel at Aetna Insurance. In 1995 LFCA became a national initiative with additional programs opening in Washington DC and Miami, Florida.
