Compass Youth Collaborative's mission is to inspire and assist youth, families, educators and neighbors to work together so that communities can reach their fullest potential.
Description:
Compass Youth Collaborative in pursuing its mission provides a focus that helps inner city young people navigate through and around challenging social and economic obstacles to educational achievement so that they can realize their full potential in school and beyond. Our programs are designed to enhance and support the academic school day without being an extension of the school day. Compass provides a safe place for youth to increase academic skills, improve their life skills, learn healthy alternatives to risky behavior and help the community they live in.
History:
In 1995 the Southend Knightriders Youth Center(now known as Compass Youth Collaborative) was created in response to the rash of gang activity in the Barry Square and Southend Neighborhoods. Since its creation, Compass has firmly established itself as a place which supports the positive youth development of Hartford's Youth. During the school year Compass offers positive youth development programs five days a week at Bellizzi Middle School. Complementing our year round program is our highly regarded summer outdoor adventure program, a collaboration with Riverfront Recapture, Inc. and the Hartford Public School system. Our membership totals 300 youth between the ages of 10-14. Daily attendance averages 175-200 youth who participate in educational, cultural, and recreational programming.
