Rebuilding Together Hartford is a volunteer driven non-profit organization, bringing volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income Hartford homeowners enabling them to live in warmth, safety and independence.
Description:
Rebuilding Together is a volunteer driven non profit that serves the elderly, people living with disabilities and multigenerational families living in Hartford. On the last Saturday in April (National Rebuilding Day) we provide free home rehabilitation services. Volunteers may register on our web site at www.RTHartford.org. We typically will rehabilitate 25-30 homes in one day with participation from over 700 volunteers. We also offer a series of home maintenance workshops. Special projects are also scheduled through out the year for corporate and faith based sponsor groups. Rebuilding Together is funded through grants from foundations, corporations, churches and individual donors. Most of the building materials and skilled labor used on Rebuilding Day are also donated.
History:
Rebuilding Together formerly known as Christmas in April was founded in Midland, Texas in 1981 as a program of neighbors helping neighbors. In 1991, Christmas in April Hartford was created to meet the needs of Hartford's low income homeowners. The program has expanded to include a homeowners maintenance workshop series empowering participants to better cope with the demands of home maintenance. An Emergency Home Repair program was also added to provide immediate home repair services when appropriate. An Energy Efficiency component was recently added to help address the escalating energy costs experienced by our homeowners. Energy modifications are made to their homes reducing their overall energy consumption and reducing energy costs.
