"When hunger stops, so will we." Foodshare will work toward ending hunger as a part of the overall community effort to alleviate poverty in Greater Hartford.
Description:
Foodshare is the regional food bank for Hartford and Tolland counties. In this role it distributes 13 tons of food per day to more than 350 local programs that provide food to people in need. Foodshare supplies food to food pantries, community kitchens, shelters, and other social service organizations serving every town in Greater Hartford. Foodshare addresses the immediate needs of hungry people, while also striving to educate and involve the community in finding real, long-term solutions to the problems of poverty and hunger.
History:
Foodshare has been serving the Greater Hartford area since 1982. In that time it has grown leaps and bounds. In 1982 Foodshare served 23 programs 63,000 lbs. of food. In 2004 we provided 332 programs with 9.3 million pounds of food. Foodshare is so efficient that for every $20 donated, it can distribute $200 worth of food. Foodshare is an affiliate of America's Second Harvest, the Nation's Food Bank Network who recently distributed more than 31 million pounds of food to areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.
