Our mission statement is "to help people in our community live with spiritual dignity and independence, caring for themselves and others, and able to fulfill their potential as children of God."
Description:
Loaves & Fishes Ministries, a tax-exempt charitable organization, provides human services in Hartford, CT. Our basic services revolve around our soup kitchen, started over twenty years ago on Asylum Hill. We serve an average of 130 meals a day, Monday through Friday. Our related programs have developed in response to changing client need. These programs include a Morning Program that provides information and education about legal issues, HIV/AIDS (prevention and blood screening), housing opportunities, literacy information, substance abuse, and employment counseling. City of Hartford Health Department now offers weekly HIV/AIDS blood-pulls and counseling with a trained representative. Our Pantry Program provides bags of groceries to families with verifiable need. We also offer a Catering Program that trains selected clients in catering, nutrition and menu planning, and a Sewing Program that offers women the chance to acquire sewing and tailoring skills that are in great demand from area dry cleaners. Our Opening Doors Program introduces individuals to the Department of Labor and their large job bank. We also provide training in English as a second language, training in computer, keyboard and internet use and job search and resume writing. We hope to increase awareness of employment services in Hartford and fill in gaps needed to make the client a viable employee. Our Business Initiative$ Program, for low to moderate income entrepreneurs, combines business training with opportunities for access to capital in an intensive 14-week course.
