The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is the only organization solely focused on the protection and management of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The A.T., a unit of the National Park system, is a 2,100 mile footpath stretching from Georgia to Maine. Volunteers created the vision of the Trail in 1925 and continue today as the heartbeat of this national and natural treasure.
Description:
The ATC works with federal and state agency partners and with 30 volunteer maintaining clubs to manage the footpath through the Appalachian Mountains. ATC offers numerous volunteer opportunities through the 31 maintaining clubs, at our visitor's center in Harper's Ferry, WV, and through our Volunteer Trail Crews program. When you volunteer for an Appalachian Trail (A.T.) crew, you get to spend five days building or rehabilitating a piece of America's best-known long-distance trail. Multiple-week volunteers are gladly accepted, for up to six weeks. We provide great scenery, food, transportation, lodging, tools, equipment, training, and the opportunity for lots of fun. No experience is necessary, only the willingness to work hard and get dirty. When you're not working, you and your crew-mates may get the chance to visit some great swimming holes, enjoy scenic vistas, or even be the guests of honor at a delicious picnic hosted by one of the volunteer Trail clubs that do the year-round maintenance of the Appalachian Trail. Enjoy camaraderie with people of all ages, from all walks of life, from all over the country, and around the world! A.T. crews are sponsored by the private, nonprofit Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and its partners, including the National Park Service and USDA Forest Service. Founded in 1925 to promote, construct, and protect the Appalachian Trail, the Conservancy assigns A.T. sections to Trail-maintaining organizations and works to support those groups and serve the public.
