Youth United for Survival is dedicated to helping youth who have experienced trauma develop into healthy and responsible people through positive youth development programs.
Description:
Y-US has been dedicated to serving community youth since 1989 when it was founded as a one-program agency in the Frog Hollow section of Hartford. Today, Y-US operates four programs serving over 300 "at-risk" youth per year ranging in age from 0-18. Over 90% of the youth are minorities and over 80% live in foster care. Y-US programs feature therapeutic recreation, peer group meetings, life skills training, and educational activities. Additionally, Y-US provides many special activities for its youth including recreational outings, summer camping, educational field trips, holiday parties, community service opportunities and overnight weekend retreats.
History:
The agency was founded in 1989 by Brother Marcus Turcotte who had worked for many years on an individual level with abused children. He saw a need to start a program that would help children on a broader scale. Y-US works both within the neighborhood and family environment to teach the children positive coping skills to deal with their adversities. Y-US' goal is for these children to become responsible and productive members of their community and to stop the "cycle of abuse". Past or current supporters of Y-US include the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the CT Department of Children and Families, and the United Way. Today, Y-US' main office and program space is located on Park Street in Hartford along with our retreat house and program site located in Bloomfield.
