[ View Opportunities ]
Last updated on June 19, 2008

The mission of the Village is to build a community of strong, healthy families who protect and nurture children.

Description:
The Village for Families & Children, Inc., is a 195-year old, non-profit, social service agency that provides child and family-strengthening services to the Capital area. Services include mental health care, foster care, adoption, family re-unification, extended day treatment, and referral services. More than half of our services are focused primarily on prevention and family strengthening and are accessed by Hartford families through our six family resource centers located in Hartford elementary schools. The Village serves more than 6,000 families per year with a staff of nearly 220 people.

History:
The Village for Families & Children, Inc., was founded in 1809 by a group of volunteers known as the Female Beneficent Society of Hartford. Their mission was to take young girls off the streets of the city. In 1865 the Society merged with the Hartford Orphan Asylum (for boys) and became an orphanage with buildings located on Hartford's Putnam Street. The buildings accommodated 150 boys, girls, and babies under 3 years of age. In 1925, the organization built the brick cottages you see today at the corner of Albany and Bloomfield Avenues in Hartford. The Village ceased being an orphanage in the 1970's.
The Village's main campus, located at Albany Avenue, provides short-term residential care to abused and neglected children in need of a stable, safe environment before they either return to their homes, are placed in foster care, or are adopted by loving families. The Village South - Center for Community Life, located on 331 Wethersfield Avenue in South Hartford, provides outpatient and therapeutic care, community-based programming, and a community center open to all in the surrounding neighborhood.
