The mission of the Indiana Department of Correction is to maintain public safety and provide offenders with self improvement programs, job skills and family values in an efficient and cost effective manner for a successful return to the community as law-abiding citizens.
Description:
The Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) strives to maintain public safety and ensure that released offenders are prepared to lead productive lives as law-abiding citizens in the communities in which they live. To that end, we have adopted the national reentry model, Transition from Prison to Community Initiative. Solutions-based reentry programming begins on day one of incarceration. An individualized treatment and programmatic plan is developed for both adult and juvenile offenders. Case management is utilized to monitor and revise the plan as the offender progresses through the various stages of the reentry process. Successful reentry planning involves multi-organizational partnerships that engage criminal justice and human service agencies, neighborhood organizations, faith-based groups, crime victims, and the general public in communities that are home to large numbers of returning offenders in collaborative problem-solving.
History:
In 2007, the Indiana Department of Correction is expected to release more than 17,500 adult and juvenile offenders from incarceration. The Department strives to improve the quality of programming and services provided to offenders while they are incarcerated and to focus its efforts on positively impacting community reentry. They seek to not only sustain, but grow their reentry efforts through grants and non-traditional funding sources as well as to continually evaluate their programs, service, and impact on the offender population. AmeriCorps*VISTA members will assist the Department in public relations and outreach, collaboration and support, volunteer mentor programming, technology support, grant development., adult offender programming, juvenile mental health services, staff development and training and case management services.
