Our general mission is to preserve and promote our community’s heritage and local area history, through maintaining a museum including permanent and temporary exhibits and a one-room school room.

Description:
We have several goals that fit within our mission. We focus on the Mooresville area, as well as Morgan County, with some items of Indiana interest. We also collect and share local school and one-room school history. We primarily seek to depict 1800’s history of the area with our permanent collection and exhibit room, and fit with the late 1800’s to early 1900’s time frame with the school room. We also have the opportunity to expand our focus with various temporary exhibits throughout the year. We provide educational and research materials and resources to groups and individuals, including teachers, students of all ages, genealogy researchers, and the general public. We offer (and continue to develop) public and school programs for groups to experience the museum, our one-room school room, take part in hands-on historic activities, and create traditional crafts. We also visit schools and other sites to present programs and activities, and we participate in a variety of community events with booths, special exhibits, traditional activities, and a portable display unit. Through all our efforts, we hope to increase a sense of pride in our community and an appreciation of our past.

History:
The Academy of Hoosier Heritage (formerly the Academy Building Museum), opened with a volunteer committee and minimal equipment and displays in April of 2000, with the re-dedication of the historic 1861 Academy Building, which followed a lengthy restoration project. The building was the original high school, not only for Mooresville, but one of the first high schools in all of central Indiana. The original museum committee developed by-laws and had a Board of Directors by the end of 2000, and hired a part-time museum manager in 2001. We have struggled to sustain the museum, with free admission, and are able to exist only with the support of volunteers, members, donors, and grants.
