Freetown Village's mission is to educate the public about African American lives and culture in Indiana through living history performances, the collection and preservation of artifacts, exhibits, and allied programs.
Description:
Freetown Village currently has more than 15 different educational programs that include theater, craft and heritage workshops and distance learning. Our goals are to provide a historic resource center, to study and encourage study about the past, to provide forums for historical entertainment and presentations, to foster and promote understanding and respect for the history of African American Culture and its contributions to our society. Freetown Village depicts history, literature and folklore through characters who represent family, educational, religious, political, and business institutions. Costumed characters help to transform people back through time to teach African American history and culture.
History:
Freetown Village was founded in 1982 in order to teach people about African American history and culture in an informative and entertaining format. Programs are presented in schools, churches, libraries, centers, hotels, parks and other public private places reaching approximately 20,000 people annually.
