Paws and Think, Inc. matches the potential of at-risk youths with canines to enhance the lives of adults and children with special needs.
Description:
Paws and Think teaches at-risk youths (e.g. youth failing academically; youth with histories of physical abuse, drug abuse, learning disabilities or aggression; or youth and who are pregnant or incarcerated) how to train dogs that are at-risk of euthanasia as service dogs, facility dogs, skilled companions and companion animals. The dogs are placed with children and adults who are physically, emotionally, or behaviorally challenged. Through the process, the youth learn leadership, job readiness, positive parenting and anger management skills; they also gain enhanced self-esteem from saving their dogs' lives, helping individuals with special needs, by feeling successful and connected.
History:
Paws and Think was incorporated in October of 2001 as a 501c3 organization and is an all-volunteer organization. We partner with multiple schools and youth agencies in providing our 4 programs: the Youth-Canine program; the Service Dog program; our Animal Assisted Activity/Therapy Program (commonly known as pet therapy), and our annual conference.
