Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana matches girls and boys ages 8 to 14 with individuals who are looking to bring a little magic into the life of a child. We can custom fit a volunteer friendship to your schedule.
History:
Big Brothers of Greater Indianapolis was organized in 1970 to provide service to boys in need of male friendship and guidance. The stated mission of the organization was to make life better for children, youth and families living in central Indiana.
Big Sisters of Central Indiana had its beginnings in 1971 when a study conducted by the Indiana Youth Service Bureau identified a need for a new kind of service for girls. Many girls in the community who were at risk of becoming delinquent, pregnant, or dropping out of school at an early age, had needs that were not being addressed by the social service system. In response to this study, Big Sisters of Central Indiana was founded in 1974, to ensure that girls received positive role models.
These two strong organizations have operated successfully over the last 30 years, serving close to 15,000 girls and boys combined during this time.
On June 19, 2001, the boards of Big Brothers of Greater Indianapolis and Big Sisters of Central Indiana made the decision that one organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, could serve more girls and boys even better than they were currently being served by separate organizations. These two agencies legally merged on January 15, 2002.
