To provide emergency and transitional family housing accompanied by supportive services and training for Morgan County families, in an effort to end generational poverty.
Description:
We operate a homeless shelter for families as well as transitional housing, and provide basic necessities, life skill classes, counseling, mentors, and follow up advocacy. In addition we assist families with rent and mortgage payments in those instances where homelessness can realistically be prevented. We have facilities to house nine emergency families and seventeen families in Transitional Housing. We have virtually doubled our capacity to serve the homeless in the last few years. This of course has increased our operating costs. Since opening a shelter in 1989, maintenance and replacement costs have risen as well. We hope the Matching Funds Program will enable us to strengthen our program services for the shelter and transitional housing, and improve our facilities in the coming years with funding to fill in the gaps from our other sources. The fund could also assist with repair and replacement, operating costs, capital fund improvements, and other program services. The potential impact is the continuation of services to provide safe emergency and transitional housing and the prevention of homelessness for families, and providing hope and new directions for at-risk children and their parents.
History:
The shelter for homeless families opened its doors on September 5, 1989. Shelter is provided on a monthly basis including food and household necessities. During their stay families work with a Case Manager on attaining housing and stability; life skill classes, Adult Basic Education, G.E.D. coursework and assistance, support groups, and individual counseling are available. Transitional housing is also available, for up to 24 months, for families working on long term goals.
