The American Lung Association of Indiana is the Hoosier affiliate of the American Lung Association, the oldest volunteer health organization in the United States. As a state wide health organization, the Indiana association promotes lung health through education, research, and advocacy. Over half a million Hoosiers suffer from lung disease. The ALA of I works throughout the state with local boards of health, hospitals, physicians and others interested in the treatment and prevention of lung diseases. The organization also offers educational programs statewide to inform Indiana citizens about respiratory health issues ans serves as an advocate for improving air quality around the state.

Description:
Programs offered by the ALA of Indiana include Christmas Seal Campaign, Freedom from Smoking Clinics, Better Breather Clubs for adults with lung disease, Golf Privilege Card, Spirit of Indiana Research dinner,Open Airways School Based Asthma Program, Lungs In Motion Rally and Asthma Walk. The Lung Centers are partnerships between health care providers and the American Lung Association of Indiana. At Lung Center sites, professional staff offers educational programs developed and approved by the ALA-I to patients with lung diseases.
The programs listed above involve people of all ages. Adults of all ages participate in our smoking clinics, Better Breathers Clubs and participate at the Spirit Dinner and Asthma Walk. Many of our adult participants began receiving services as a child and continue to receive services. These adults actively participate in our programs allowing us to continue to serve those with lung disease.

History:
The American Lung Association is the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States, with a National Office and constituent and affiliate associations across the country. Founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis, ALA today fights lung disease in all its forms, with special emphasis on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health. Our mission is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. We currently employ 15 full-time staff who cover the entire state of Indiana. In addition we have approximately 300 volunteers who assist with various areas of our programs and services.
