Easter Seals Crossroads Rehabilitation Center is a community resource working in partnership with children and adults with disabilities or special needs and their families to promote growth, dignity and independence.
Description:
Easter Seals Crossroads provides therapy services to children through the First Steps program for children under three. Older children and adults also receive therapy from Crossroads' developmental, occupational, physical and speech therapists. The employment division helps those seeking employment by offering assessment, training and support to get a job. The Assistive Technology division provides equipment to make it possible for persons to secure or maintain employment. Deaf Community Services provides language interpretation, and case management to assist deaf or hard of hearing persons to fully participate in the community. Adult Care provides a day care for adults using a medical model.
History:
Founded in 1936, by two women, who organized a group of teenagers with disabilities to produce handicrafts, Easter Seals Crossroads affiliated with National Society for Crippled Children (later known as National Easter Seals), in 1940. Physical therapy and preschool education were early programs. In 1958, Crossroads became a United Way agency and soon added employment services. Sensory Aids Technology Center was established in 1988 to help persons with disabilities access computers through appropriate devices. Crossroads Industrial Center moved to its present location in 1985. Approximately 100 production workers earn
above minimum wage for light assembly work there.. In 1990, the move was made to the present location near 52nd Street and Keystone. Crossroads acquired the Indianapolis Speech and Hearing Center and Deaf Community Services in 2001.
