Inspiring the community to recognize, embrace, and include the contributions of individuals with disabilities.

Description:
Noble of Indiana is a not-for-profit organization serving more than 2,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities in Central Indiana. Noble helps individuals with developmental disabilities to pursue personally meaningful lives in their community through therapeutic treatments and innovative vocational and life skills training. Noble provides a vast array of services, including group habilitation, individual habilitation, supported employment, facility and community-based sheltered employment, pre-vocational services, respite care, waiver case management services and children's services. These services are funded with dollars received through contract and sales income, group home companies and governmental agencies including Title XX, Vocational Rehabilitation, Waiver, Choice and First Steps.

History:
Noble of Indiana was founded in 1953 by parents of children with disabilities which faced frustration, rejection and isolation. They were advised by doctors and other professionals to give up their babies at birth - to consign the infants to one of the few overcrowded institutions available in the state. Parents who dared to keep these children at home were very alone in their ordeal, with no chance for a social life and no educational or support services. But two parents of children with disabilities - Frank Scherrer, an Indianapolis businessman, and Rabbi Maurice Goldblatt of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation - refused to accept the status quo. They called a meeting for families interested in organizing educational opportunities for their children with developmental disabilities. Over 200 people showed up on February 10, 1953, and the meeting had to be moved from the East Room of the Indiana World War Memorial to the Auditorium. A decision was made that night to open what was to be referred to as Noble School, in part because it was to be located on Noble Street, and also because it was such a "noble" idea.
