Brooke's Place supports grieving young people and their families in the belief that hope for tomorrow begins today.
Description:
Brooke's Place is a community based not-for-profit organization which provides grief support to young people ages 3 - 20+ and their parents/guardians. Support groups meet twice monthly year-round. All services are free and an at-cost meal is served each program night. Hands on activities including crafts, art materials, games and other grieving aids provide supportive tools during group time. These activities are designed to help young people identify their fears, concerns and grief reactions. All individuals learn coping skills to help them manage their grief, lessen the pain of their sadness and help them reconcile the death of their loved ones.
History:
Why We're Here In central Indiana there is only one place for a young grieving boy or girl to find ongoing comfort and support...a place to tell personal stories and share memories...above all, a place to heal. It's Brooke's Place. Young people and their families find friends at Brooke's Place who share their pain. Friends they can lean on, and friends they can trust with their most personal feelings. It is truly a place where kids help kids! National statistics alarmingly reveal the number of children (approximately 1.5 million) will have one or both of their parents die before reaching age 15; six of every 10 children experience a major loss before they're out of high school; a variety of negative behaviors and symptoms often can be linked to unresolved grief over childhood loss; there are approximately only 50 centers in the United States dedicated to serving the needs of grieving children on an ongoing basis. Brooke's Place was born in 1997 from a vision and need perceived by Pam Wright, its founder and Executive Director. Pam acutely felt the sudden tragic death of a friend's husband, and the effect it had on his children, Brooke and Brent. Brooke's Place was named in honor of Brooke Wright's courageous grief work and journey. It is an ongoing tribute to her and all other grieving children, teens and young adults. Brooke's Place is making a difference. In 1999 Brooke's Place served 140 individuals on one Program Night. With the addition of multiple programs our organization served 2,125 individuals in 2002.
