Bradford Woods is dedicated to ensuring stewardship of its environment and providing state of the art educational programs, recreational opportunities and professional service. We are global leaders of inclusive action learning environments.
Description:
Bradford Woods operates three program centers. The Camping and Retreats Center exists to provide individuals and groups with the opportunity for personal and professional growth and renewal. The center is a major resource for working with persons with disabilities and chronic illnesses. It has been home to Camp Riley for over 5 decades. This center also hosts churches, business groups and university affiliates as a site for meetings, reunions, special events and camps. Our Environmental Resource Center works with young students and teachers throughout Indiana providing hands-on experiences that encourage students to learn in, and about, the outdoors. Our goal is to enhance participants' personal relationship with their environment by increasing their knowledge and awareness of environmental processes and relationship, heightening awareness of historical and cultural influences, and promoting stewardship through educated decision making. Finally, our Challenge Education Center seeks to provide innovative learning opportunities that enable individuals, groups, organizations and communities to maximize their potential. Programs focus on team and community development, interpersonal reflection, personal skill growth, outdoor technical skills, leadership, and therapeutic intervention.
History:
For over 50 years Bradford Woods has been providing recreational, educational, and leadership development opportunities to youth and adults locally, nationally, and globally. Today the organization serves over 25,000 people annually representing many walks of live and many places of the world. Given to Indiana University in 1938 by John Bradford (the first major gift of Herman B Wells' presidency), Bradford Woods was established in 1941 through the early foresight of Dr. Reynold Carlson. We are leaders in experiential learning and dedicated to providing state of the art educational programs, recreational opportunities and professional service to a wide variety of organizations. Bradford Woods is also the home of the American Camping Association and Camp Riley, sponsored by the Riley Children's Foundation. Bradford Woods also prides itself on our diverse staff. We have been attracting international visitors and staff since the early 1980's. Over a hundred students and professionals have worked or volunteered at Bradford Woods expanding the BW Experience globally to England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Japan, Korea, Russia, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Venezuela, Holland, West Africa, Malaysia, and Belarus to mention a few.
