The mission of Art With a Heart is to provide hands-on visual arts experiences that educate and inspire Indianapolis-area children at risk.
Description:
Art With a Heart (AWAH) is a non-profit visual arts organization which, with its collaborative partners, offers art instruction, with high quality art materials, to primary and secondary school age children whose parents or guardians do not have the ability to pay for such instruction. The geographic areas served by AWAH are traditionally undeserved in both access to art programs and resources, due to low incomes and educational achievements. Current programs offered by AWAH include summer art camps for children and youth in the near east side
of Indianapolis and tuition scholarships to selected summer students to continue art instruction throughout
the year. Forty children currently participate in the year-long scholarship program. These children receive art instruction from trained art instructors two Saturdays each month. AWAH collaborates with a charter school offering art instruction one day a week after school.
History:
Art With a Heart was started by Carol Conrad in 2002 as an outpouring of thanksgiving for the blessings of owning her own studio, Kaleidoscope of Art, had brought her and AWAH was her way of giving back to the community to those most in need. In 2005, Art With a Heart will be hosting their fourth season of art camps at six sites on the near east side of Indianapolis. These sites have set up this program to provide students with good alternatives for summer activities to help deter crime and give students a chance to learn and grow during the summer months. Over 440 students will take part in these art camps.
