CKF Back To School Family Day raises awareness of the importance of health insurance; gives families the opportunity to sign up for Hoosier Healthwise programs, Medicaid, and/or Health Advantage; and allows families access to other health and social services information as they prepare for the return to school. Families will have the opportunity to receive free school supplies (i.e. crayons, folders, backpacks, etc) and complete applications for Hoosier Healthwise and Health Advantage onsite. Back to School Family Day also includes more than 50 health- and social service-related informational booths, including WIC (Women, Infants and Children, a federally funded program that provides nutrition supplements for pregnant women and children), dental and vision screenings, immunizations, as well as services provided by MCHD’s Bell Flower Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Clinic and the Adolescent Care Team in Our Neighborhood (ACTION) Center (a teen-centered health clinic). Some of the other entities represented at Back to School Family Day include Prevent Blindness of Indiana, Girl Scouts of Hoosier Capital, Center Township Trustee, WFYI’s Read to Lead in Literacy, K-ID’s BMV, INC., Marion County Public Library as well as representatives from other community-based entities. The seventh annual (2007) Back to School Family Day had such an impressive turnout that families lined up for blocks outside the gates of the parking lot two hours before the doors opened. Backpacks, school supplies, fresh fruit and books were among many of the items given to children and families at the event. In addition to giveaways, attendees reaped the benefits of receiving free health screenings and information and enrolling in Hoosier Healthwise and Health Advantage. Our numbers at-a-glance are as follows: a total of 11,823 individuals attended the event (up from 6,478 in 2006), 2,740-backpacks, 90-immunizations, 45-blood-lead tests, 37-applications for Hoosier Healthwise and/or Advantage, 31-sports physicals, 17-booster seats, 33-vision screenings and 97-dental screenings. Back to School Family Day will be evaluated by the number of participants in the above health screenings, a survey at the entrance to determine demographics, and completed applications at the event for Hoosier Healthwise and Health Advantage.
There will be an orientation meeting held on Tuesday, July 22nd at 6:00pm. Groups are asked to send at least one representative to attend the meeting. We welcome volunteers ages 16 and up. The event is held outside and weather conditions are normally hot.
