Wynona's House Child Advocacy Center seeks to promote the healing of victims of child abuse by providing a strong community response to investigation, prosecution, treatment, and prevention of child abuse.
Description:
Wynona's House is an innovative collaboration between public and private entities that serves as an urban model for responding to child abuse in New Jersey. Three agencies work together to protect child abuse victims in Essex County. On site partners include the Essex County Prosecutor's Office; the Division of Youth and Family Services; and the regional Diagnostic and Treatment Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The highest numbers of child abuse and neglect cases in the State of New Jersey are reported in Essex County. Essex County also has the highest number of substantiated cases of child sexual/physical abuse with over 1,200 in the past year. To make an impact on these debilitating statistics, Wynona's House staff sees the most serious cases of sexual abuse, physical abuse and neglect. The safety and comfort of our children are most important, and therefore, Wynona's House enables children to receive the most enhanced services at one, child-friendly location where the experts involved in the case work collaboratively to ensure better treatment and better longer term outcomes for these children.
History:
Wynona's House was organized in 1999. Since 2004, Wynona's House became an independent non-profit serving the needs of abused children. The Essex County model unique in New Jersey. It is, in fact, the only Child Advocacy Center in New Jersey where all services needed by our children can be accessed at one location.
In October 2003, Wynona's House became certified by the National Children's Alliance as a fully accredited Child Advocacy Center. Our agency is named in honor of the late Senator Wynona M. Lipman, who championed the rights of children, women, and families, and minorities.
