4-H provides dynamic, informal, and positive youth development programs and interest clubs for young people in K-12. This is accomplished through hands-on, experiential learning activities facilitated by trained adult volunteers who enjoy working with children. The 4-H motto is "Learn By Doing".
Description:
Adult volunteers are essential to the success of the 4H program and are trained to be responsible for teaching, mentoring, and guiding 4H club members. When the children participate in an interest club of their choice (horticulture, pets, ecology, archery, horse-lovers, etc.), they develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to become competent, caring, and contributing citizens of the world. The 4-H Pledge describes the four H's: "I pledge my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service, and my HEALTH to better living for my club, my community, my country, and my world."
History:
Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Clubs of Union County has provided free educational and experiential programs since WWII. Programs are supported by Rutgers, the State University of NJ, the Rutgers NJ Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Union County Freeholders.
