History:
History of Children’s Specialized Hospital
Children’s Specialized Hospital was founded in 1891 as Children’s Country Home where children were brought from city hospitals for recreation in the country. This activity was carried out in cooperation with the New York Herald Tribune’s Fresh Air Fund. Over the years the Hospital has served the area in the diphtheria epidemic of 1903; housed 71 refugees of the Great Morgan Disaster of 1918; and served as an isolation hospital during the influenza epidemic that followed. From 1942 through 1956, the Hospital served the needs of victims of poliomyelitis exclusively. After the successful control of this disease by the Salk Vaccine, our attentions were turned to evaluation and intensive therapy cerebral palsied children and other types of young people with physical disabilities. This role has expanded to include many infants, victims of auto accidents, sports accidents, and others who can benefit from an intensive rehabilitation program. In August of 1977, a new 60-bed patient wing was opened after many years of planning and construction. This marked the beginning of a new era in the history of the Hospital. Today, our patients are cared for in a modern addition with separate nursing areas for the younger children and teenagers. Our Long-Term Care unit which opened in 1988, is New Jersey’s first such hospital-based facility. The Richard B. Ahfeld Center for Children (formerly known as the Outpatient Center) was opened in July of 1988. Located in Fanwood, New Jersey, the center provides the Hospital’s Outpatient Services and Special Programs. In 1992, the Hospital opened a 30-bed facility with a full outpatient program in Toms River, New Jersey. There is now another outpatient center in Hamilton, New Jersey as well. The Pediatric Practice in Roselle Park and Newark was opened in 1996. The rehabilitation team includes physicians, nurses, therapists, dieticians, teachers, psychologists and pharmacists, all working together to allow the child to attain his greatest potential- medically, socially, academically, and emotionally.
