To promote aging in place by bringing two balanced meals to the homebound frail and elderly in New Brunswick and Highland Park.
Description:
Meals on Wheels of Greater New Brunswick delivers two nutritionally balanced meals each weekday, including all holidays, to the homebound, frail and elderly regardless of race, religon or ability to pay. The meals are delivered every day until the client (meal receiver) no longer requires our services. We are a volunteer organization and operational costs are kept to a minimum. We are able to serve to low-income and poverty clients who donate very little or nothing towards the cost of food.
History:
Meals on Wheels of Greater New Brunswick began in April, 1973. A group discussion began in November of 1972 at the Princeton Red Cross regarding Food for the Elderly. By April, a Red Cross vehicle was donated and seventeen clients were served two meals a day. The meals are prepared at the kitchen at St. Peter's University Hospital and the program has now expanded to 64 clients per day on 4 routes with a 3 teams of 6 volunteers required each day.
