The Committee for the DCNWJ is responsible for major and exterior maintenance at the Center. We also use funds to help the patients and improve their dialysis experience. Other commitments include subsidizing patient travel on a needs basis, put on an annual two day picnic for all shifts. We provide T-shirts and blankets to all patients and consider other ways to improve their dialysis experience.
Description:
The committee meets once a month a 8.00 p.m., on the third Thursday, to discuss our administration needs. We develop action items which may include some other volunteer activity during the month. Recently a new member installed a wireless Internet connection for our patients to use while on dialysis. We anticipate some clean up and paint work in the spring.
History:
The Dialysis Center of Northwest Jersey was incorporated in 1972, as a citizen response to the difficulties of a local dialysis patient. Volunteers built the original five bed building and went through years of fund raising and negotiations before they forged a partnership with Morristown Memorial Hospital to administer the dialysis, which finally began in 1980. The volunteers then took on the extension of the unit to twelve stations, opening in 1986. Once the mortgage was paid off we entered a new phase when Atlantic Health Systems became responsible for interior maintenance and the volunteer board is responsible for the fabric of the building and maintains the exterior.
