The Raptor Trust is a licensed wild bird rehabilitation facility (a wild bird hospital). We take care of injured and orphaned native birds with the goal of making them healthy and releasing them back into the wild. Of the more than 3500 birds that come through our infirmary each year, most of them (approximately 2000) come in the summer months. It is during those months that we rely on our dedicated volunteers. We are still in need of volunteers all year round.
Description:
Volunteer chores consist of providing food and water to non-raptors, daily cleaning of outside aviaries. You also get to see a wide variety of wild birds and raptors brought to the infirmary by caring individuals like yourself. Volunteers are not permitted to handle raptors, although they are welcome to watch the trained staff do their work. There are two volunteer shifts from during the Winter months: a morning shift (8am-12noon)and an afternoon shift (12noon-4pm) We try to fill each shift with two volunteers, so please consider whether you can commit yourself each week on the day and time you have chosen.
History:
The Raptor Trust was started in 1968 by Len and Diane Soucy. It was run out of their home and maintained by them and a few volunteers. During that time hawks and owls had no legal protection but in 1972 the federal protection agency started the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. In 1982 The Raptor Trust came to be. It was incorporated as a nonprofit organization dealing with the protection and care of injured and orphaned wild birds. For more information about our Trust please visit our website.
