The Reeves-Reed Arboretum is a suburban conservancy dedicated to environmental and horticultural education for children and adults and to the enjoyment of nature through the professional care and preservation of a former country estate.

Description:
The Reeves-Reed Arboretum encompasses over 13 acres of magnificent natural beauty, nestled about a mile from downtown Summit. The grounds are open to the public daily from dawn until dusk, free of charge. The office and library, located in the restored Wisner House, are open Monday through Friday from 9am until 4pm. The Garden Gift Shop (908) 277-1190, located in the lower level of the Wisner House, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am until 4pm. It carries a unique selection of gifts for your garden, family, and friends. The Wisner House and Gardens are available for rental for private functions.

History:
Listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places, the Reeves-Reed Arboretum was originally constructed as a private estate by John Hornor Wisner, who purchased 12.5 acres of land in Summit, NJ in 1889. He built a colonial revival home that has since come to be known as the Wisner House. Mr. Wisner commissioned Calvert Vaux, who designed Central Park along with Frederick Olmstead, to landscape the property. Mrs. Wisner planted the first clusters of daffodils at the Arboretum. In 1916, new owners, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Reeves, expanded the daffodil collection; today, more than 35,000 daffodils bloom in early spring in the Arboretum's famous Daffodil Bowl.
In the mid-1920’s, prominent landscape architects Ellen Biddle Shipman and Carl Pilat designed the azalea garden and the rose garden with a connecting rock pool garden. The Charles L. Reed family, the last private owners, purchased the estate in 1968. They added the patterned herb garden, established the woodland trails, and maintained the property’s design heritage. In 1974, local residents raised the money needed to purchase and preserve the estate as an arboretum.
