The Hunterdon County Division of Legal Services of Northwest Jersey's mission is to provide access to the justice system for low-income Hunterdon County residents by providing high-quality, comprehensive legal advice and representation in civil matters.
Description:
The Hunterdon County Division of Legal Services of Northwest Jersey, Inc. (formerly Hunterdon County Legal Service, Corp) has been delivering high quality legal assistance to the low income population of Hunterdon County for 26 years. Legal assistance is provided in civil areas of the law, mainly in the following priority areas: Support for Families: It is a priority of LSNWJ to safeguard, preserve and/or improve the integrity, safety and well-being of the family. The program therefore provides legal assistance in traditional family law as well as access to health care and/or health care insurance and the proper and thorough education of children and adults. Preservation of the Home: Since the integrity, safety and well-being of the family is threatened by the loss or uninhabitability of the home, it is a priority of LSNWJ to provide service in such areas as avoiding loss of the home (through eviction or foreclosure) and ameliorating dangerous or negative environmental conditions. Maintenance of Economic Stability: Loss or substantial reduction of income or assets can lead to loss of the home and the eventual break-up of the family. It is therefore a priority of LSNWJ-Hunterdon Division to provide services that will protect against the loss or reduction of a family's income, source of income, its assets or its ability to produce income, assistance in obtaining new or substitute income, or assistance in clearing a family's credit record or debts. While the foregoing address families, LSNWJ-Hunterdon Division does not exclude those living alone and/or outside a family context. Assistance to such individuals, in all priority areas, is as important to societal well-being as assistance to families and will be dispensed without discrimination to individuals.
Service to populations with special vulnerabilities is also rendered where reasonable and necessary. Such populations, whether families or individuals, include the elderly, the homebound, the disabled, the chronic or severely mentally ill, and those with other special problems which cause difficulty in accessing the legal system.
