Million Mom March

[ View Opportunity ]
Last updated on June 24, 2008

We are a national, grass roots, chapter-based organization with the mission of preventing gun death and injury, and supporting victims and survivors of gun trauma.

Description:
The Mercer County community (and NJ in general) is served by the Million Mom March in a number of different ways. We attend numerous events (community fests, health and/or safety fairs, PTA meetings, etc.) with the purpose of educating the public on the dangers of having a gun in the home. We distribute materials directed toward parents, teens, youngsters, and the general public. Federal and state gun violence prevention legislation is also supported through providing background information, issuing action alerts, and lobbying. We support victims/survivors of gun violence by providing a Victims' Resources Brochure, organizing get-togethers (such as t-shirt designing and tree planting events), and hosting the annual United Against Gun Violence rally and candlelight vigil close to the anniversary of our original Million Mom March on Washington, DC on Mother's Day, 2000.

History:
The Mercer County Million Mom March Chapter was first organized in August of 2000, shortly after the successful nationwide Million Mom March for sensible gun laws on Mother's Day, 2000. During this event, over 850,000 people marched on Washington, DC, and hundreds of thousands others marched on their state capitols demanding that Congress pay more attention to public safety rather than the powerful gun lobby. Realizing after the March that gun laws would not change due to one march on Washington, county-based Chapters were organized all across the country to continue this work. A few years later, the Million Mom March Chapters merged forces with the powerful DC-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The NJ Million Mom March also consists of Chapters in Bergen/Passaic, Essex, Union, and Monmouth/Ocean ("Shore Chapter") counties. Those areas without "active" Chapters are covered by the NJ MMM (609-882-3711; mercermmm@comcast.net).
