Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, a nonprofit volunteer organization is the nation’s educational library serving people who cannot effectively read standard print because of a visual, perceptual, or other physical disability. Our mission is to create opportunities for individual success by providing, and promoting the effective use of, accessible educational materials. Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic’s vision is for all people to have equal access to the printed word.

Description:
Volunteers in our New Jersey studio produce educational materials in accessible formats. These texts, at every academic level, are recorded for students who cannot read standard print.

This material enables students to achieve educational and professional success promoting independence, increasing productivity and enhancing their self-esteem and quality of life.

History:
For 58 years, RFB&D has been an invaluable educational resource, enabling those with print disabilities to complete their educations, advance their careers, and gain self-esteem.

Recording for the Blind was established in 1948 by Anne T. Macdonald to provide recorded textbooks to veterans blinded in World War II. We were legally incorporated in 1951.

By 1970, we found ourselves serving an increasing number of people who have learning disabilities. In recognition of this growing member population, we changed our name in 1995 to Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, to serve all people with "print disabilities" — those who can't effectively read standard print because of a disability. Today, we serve 141,660 members worldwide and distributed 258,918 titles in 2005. More than 70 percent of our membership — which includes students in kindergarten through graduate school, as well as working professionals — are recognized with learning disabilities.
