MADD's mission is to stop drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking.
Description:
MADD is one of the most recognizable charities in the United States, but few people know all that we do. During the holidays, you may have tied a red ribbon to your car to symbolize your commitment not to drink and drive; our red ribbon campaign has taken place every holiday season for 20 years. We have worked hard to pass tougher laws and are still working to fix loopholes, get appropriate penalties for offenders, and introduce new legislation. But we do so much more! MADD provides free services to families who have suffered a loss due to drunk driving, and to those who have been seriously injured in crashes. Being a MADD Victim Advocate is one of the most rewarding volunteer jobs you will ever find. In addition, MADD volunteers spoke to nearly 58,000 NJ parents, teenagers, schoolchildren, teachers and law enforcement officers last year. We are currently stepping up our efforts to prevent underage drinking. We work in neighborhoods, in state coalitions, and nationally to put an end to the devastation of drunk driving, which is 100% preventable. Our new CAMPAIGN TO ELIMINATE DRUNK DRIVING is promoting solutions that work and mobilizing new volunteers in a fight we CAN win!
History:
MADD was founded in 1980 by mothers whose children had been killed and maimed by habitual drunk drivers who received minimal punishments for their crimes. Some of the first chapters were founded in New Jersey. Drunk driving deaths have declined more than 40% nationwide, and even more dramatically in NJ, close to 60%! More than 330,000 people are alive today who would otherwise have perished. But nearly 17,000 people still die each year, and a half million are injured. Progress is literally stalled in NJ, where about 270 people continue to die unnecessarily each year. With children now beginning to try alcohol for the first time at the average age of 11, and alcohol use so widespread on our college campuses, we face serious setbacks in the coming decade if we fail to alert parents of the dangers of alcohol use among adolescents. It takes more than a shocking speech at Prom time, and MADD has exciting new programs that are proven to reduce and prevent underage drinking.
