Literacy Volunteers of Union County is a non-profit, community based organization whose mission is to promote and foster increased ADULT LITERACY in Union County. We believe that supportive tutoring is an excellent way of teaching crucial functional life skills to our learners. All of our tutors are volunteers. To train our tutors, we offer training workshops at various locations around Union County. After the training, our tutors are matched with students. Our students meet with their tutors in public places all around Union County. Nearly all of these tutoring sessions take place in 22 of our public libraries. One of the strengths of our volunteer-based program is the flexibility it offers. Tutoring sessions are scheduled at a time and location that is convenient to both tutor and learner. Out tutors are only asked to provide one day one hour a week.
Description:
Literacy Volunteers of Union County provides FREE one-to-one and small group tutoring to ADULTS in both Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language. The population we serve can be described as those adults who have failed in traditional classroom settings as well as those whose background has prevented them from attaining higher literacy levels.
History:
Literacy Volunteers of Union County(LV-UC) has, since 1987, offered a program providing volunteer tutors to adult learners. At the present time, LV-UC is the only successful program offering INDIVIDUALIZED TUTORING services FREE of charge to ADULTS residents across Union County.

Overall Experience
It is rewarding to see an adult eager to learn and see the pride they feel at their accomplishments.

I wasn't sure what type of impact I could make as a literacy volunteer as I didn't have any teaching background. I soon found out that my students - adult men with learning disabilities - didn't need a professional teacher. They needed someone who was willing to give them an hour each week to work with them to improve their reading skills. The skills I learned at my training session prepared me to understand the different learning styles of my students and most of all to give them the room and support they needed to learn. Many times they are unsure of themselves. All they need is the encouragement to take a chance and believe in themselves. My current student wouldn't think of ending a class 5 minutes early! He wants to make the most of every minute. We usually spend the end of the class reading the sports page in the newspaper. He is able to see the sight words and phonics lessons we cover applied to the real world. posted on March 25, 2008 |
Overall Experience
Being a Literacy Volunteer has helped me see what a difference only one hour a week can make in helping an adult learn to read.

Literacy Volunteers is a non profit organization dedicated to helping adults learn to read, write and improve their English.
I have been a volunteer tutor for four years. Being a tutor has opened my eyes to the many things I take for granted such as reading a restaurant menu, getting driving directions from mapquest and most of all, being able to read a bedtime story to my children. By learning to read, our students are able to get better jobs, apply for citizenship, read the newspaper and obtain their drivers license.
I have found that you can really make a difference in someone's life with this volunteer opportunity. posted on February 4, 2008 |
