Teach Someone to Read or Speak English

Last updated on May 29, 2008

Literacy Volunteer tutors are trained to work with adult students who wish to improve their literacy skills. Tutors work with adults who need to improve their reading, writing, math and English skills. Can you imagine not being able to read to your child, communicate with your doctor, or fill out a job application? Our tutors offer their students the opportunity to change their lives. Here is one student's story: Petra and her family were evacuated from Croatia in 2001. She arrived here with two suitcases and no understanding of the English language. After two years with Literacy Volunteers Petra is able to converse and write in English and read with understanding. Petra's verbal skills have improved so much that she has been promoted to the position of supervisor at the Lutheran Home where she works. She instructs her co-workers, participates actively in administrative meetings, creates written reports, and has been awarded "Employee of the Month." Literacy Volunteers has given her new hope for her future. There are thousands of adults in NJ like Petra who are improving their lives by increasing their literacy skills. Thousands more are on waiting lists hoping to be matched with a tutor.

Training requirements vary by program, but are typically 15 hours. Tutors are usually asked to serve at least on year and meet with their student weekly. Tutors must be at least 18 years old.
