World Computer Exchanges mission is to bridge the digital divide for the world's poorest youth by collecting donated, working computers and building the capacity of schools and youth organizations in developing countries to connect and maintain them. By re utilizing computer equipment, we help the environment by keeping computers out of landfills.
Description:
WCE utilizes volunteers in 30 cities in the US and other countries to collect working computers to be shipped to schools and organizations serving youth in developing countries. We also utilize online volunteers to assist our partner organizations in developing countries in planning and fund raising for a shipment of computers, managing telecentres to support maintenance of the computers, and developing content relevant to the local culture. Our ultimate goal is to connect youth and schools in various parts of the world to each other via the internet.
History:
• We have connected to the Internet 1,045,060 youth in 2,478 schools, orphanages, and centers through our delivery of over 25,000 donated computers.
• Our 173 volunteer Programme Officers help our Partners with planning, fund raising and tech support Summary.
• We gather and test computers in several US and Canadian cities.
• We are proud to work with Peace Corps Volunteers, Rotary Clubs, the U.N., USAID, World Bank, and the World Economic Forum.
• We always seek to operate transparently, respectfully and as "virtually" as possible to minimize costs.
