DMH/Worcester State Hospital assures and provides access to services and supports to meet the mental health needs of individuals, enabling them to live, work and participate in their communities. The Department establishes standards to ensure effective and culturally competent care to promote recovery. We set policy, promote self-determination, protect human rights and support mental health training and research. This critical mission is accomplished by working with other state agencies, individuals, families, providers, and communities.
Description:
Worcester State Hospital provides treatment and discharge planning for persons with severe and persistent mental illness. It serves an adult population, using therapeutic interventions of psychiatric, psychological and psychosocial, occupational and recreational treatment. The goal of treatment in all of these areas is to reach the highest level of health and independence, and discharge to the least restrictive environment. Currently the Hospital serves approximately 150 men and women. Each patient has an individual service plan, and treatment programs are geared to the various treatment goals over a continuum of care.
History:
Worcester State Hospital is one of the oldest inpatient psychiatric facilities in the country. Over the years, a focus on community services for this population has helped hundreds of individuals gain independence in less restrictive environments. The hospital "downsized" to the current Bryan Building some 50 years ago, and it has continued to make use of the growing community resources.
