The mission of the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County is to create an environment in which women and children thrive. The agency works to empower women, strengthen families and eliminate racism.
Description:
The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County provides a wide variety of services as it works toward meeting the mission. These programs and services include: • 24-hour Anne Arundel County domestic violence hotline and sexual assault hotlines • Emergency shelter for female victims of domestic violence and their children • Counseling for individuals, couples, and families • Domestic violence legal services, including staff with bilingual skills • Adult and teen parent education classes including parenting, financial budgeting and employability training. • Childcare for preschool children with parents attending adult education classes • An after-school program at three area middle schools and at Annapolis High School • A Mentoring Program for emotionally challenged children and youth • Clothes Closet and food and baby pantries.
History:
The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, established in 1920, is the leading human services agency for women and their families in Anne Arundel County. Begun to provide housing and meals for young women working in the state capital, the organization has grown and changed with the ever-changing population in Anne Arundel County. Today, the YWCA offers a broad spectrum of programs and services including career counseling, parenting classes, GED and ESOL workshops, counseling services, domestic violence legal services, domestic violence counseling and support groups, an Abuse Intervention Program for perpetrators of domestic violence, specialized counseling and support groups for children affected by domestic violence, an emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence, a twenty-four hour domestic violence hotline, mentoring programs, and an after-school program for high-risk middle school students. The YWCA also sponsors the Tribute to Women of Color and the Tribute to Women and Industry.
