History:
The Y has been a community resource since 1853. By November 1853, YMCA membership already had topped 500. The first building in the U.S. designed exclusively for YMCA was built in 1859 in West Baltimore, at Pierce and Schroeder Streets. Over the course of the past 150+ years, the YMCA has grown and responded to community needs in a variety of locations throughout the greater Baltimore region. Of particular historical note is the Y's commitment to reaching out to underserved communities and populations. In 1869, Bishop Alexander Wayman of Bethel AME Church began efforts to form a YMCA for the African-American community. In 1892, the first African-American YMCA opens in a 12-room house at 416 W. Biddle Street In 1918, the cornerstone was laid for the new Y Druid Hill Center. The Y is one of the area’s largest not-for-profit human service providers and was featured on the Baltimore Business Journal’s list of top 100 Largest Private Sector Employers in the Baltimore Area in 2002. The Y employs 1,500 people in Central Maryland and benefits from the commitment of 1,832 volunteers.
