The mission of CALMRA, Inc. is to improve the lives of persons with developmental disabilities by providing the highest quality residential and other support services in an ethical and loving environment.
Description:
CALMRA, Inc. provides residential and other support to 45 individuals in fifteen community residential homes and 12 individuals in our Individual Support Service program. All persons served by CALMRA, Inc. have a primary diagnosis of mental retardation and many have secondary, very severe physical disabilities. Many of the people we serve would be in Institutions or Nursing Homes if we we not able to provide homes for them in the community. CALMRA takes great pride in providing comfortable, homes in nice neighborhoods. We strive to provide many activities and community outings for those we serve regardless of their disabilities. CALMRA's funding comes primarily from the State of Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration. This provides our operating budget. We also receive a small portion of our funds from fundraising, donations, and grants, which are usually used for home improvements and fulfillment of consumer's "wish lists". Any assistance we are fortunate enough to receive - from donations, volunteering to "be a buddy" to a resident, doing yard work, or even serving on our Board or one of our committees is greatly appreciated.
History:
CALMRA, Inc. was founded in 1982 by families who all had a child with mental retardation. These families were aging and were concerned about who would care for their children when they no longer could. CALMRA was formed to meet this need. We began providing services in 1992.
