Our mission is to share the power of learning through education, community building, and advocacy.
Description: We help adults become self-sufficient, productive citizens through ESL classes, GED preparation, Citizenship classes, Functional Work English programs, and basic reading and math tutoring. We train hundreds of volunteers each year to be confident, effective adult literacy and ESL tutors in programs across Minnesota, through pre-service trainings and in-service workshops. We advocate for community literacy programs and their learners through speaking out about state literacy needs and services.
History: MLC is a statewide, 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1972 by a group of volunteer tutors who worked with adults to improve their basic reading and English skills. Today MLC is a primary provider of a wide range of literacy services for adults and children, native-born citizens and recent immigrants, and urban and rural residents.
