The mission of Foley Area C.A.R.E. is to assist our elder neighbors to remain healthy and active members in their community and to live safely with dignity and independence in their own homes.

Description:
We are a neighborhood-based service that organizes neighbors to assist elder neighbors. We utilize professional and volunteer personnel to coordinate the necessary and appropriate agencies and resources to provide health and services needed by residents. We do not replace existing service providers, but coordinate, supplement, and tap into existing community resources. We provide services to elders age 60 and over who reside within a 10-mile radius of Foley.
We work in collaboration with existing agencies that provide services to elders. Our focus is on connecting elders with those agencies and filling any gaps. Services we provide include friendly visiting, in-home respite care, socialization, telephone reassurance, simple home repairs, lawn/garden services, transportation to/from appointments, assisting with paperwork and explaining medicare, multigenerational activities. The Program also provides emergency cell phones to elders. These phones are donated by Telecom Pioneers and are used to call 911 in the case of an emergency.
We offer a support group called "Power Hour" for clients and caregivers. The group meets monthly and offers a variety of helpful educational topics. Volunteers are available to provide respite care for those attending the "Power Hour" group which meets in Heritage Senior Apartments.

History:
A group of concerned local citizens saw the need for a program to assist the growing elder population in the Foley area. In the fall of 2002 the plans were set to partner with Elderberry Institute and implement an elder friendly model called the Living at Home/Block Nurse Program. The first client was provided transportation service in March of 2003. The program has continued to grow and provide services to the growing number of elders within the community.
