Our mission is to promote and support the safety, well being, and success of Latino children and families through networking, advocacy, outreach and education in a culturally and linguistically competent manner.
Description:
El Dia del Los Ninos Committee is a subcommittee of the Latino Children and Families Council. This subcommittee works to create an annual event in which tradition and education can be celebrated among families. El Dia de Los Ninos has its roots in Latin America. It is traditionally celebrated in Latin America and many Asian and European countries to honor and commemorate the essential role of children in the future of every country. El Dia de Los Ninos is unique in its purpose: to uplift children. The committee is a collaboration among agencies that work with and/or serve the Latino community. This includes, but is not limited to, the City of Madison, UW-Extension, Joining Forces for Families, The Epilepsy Foundation, Parental Stress Center, Dane County Parent Council (Head Start), Community Coordinated Child Care, etc. This committee meets in the beginning of January to plan and organize the El Dia de Los Ninos event which takes place in late April.
History:
2008 will be the fourth year in a row that this event will be celebrated. The date and location still to be determined. The date is usually one Saturday in late April. Volunteers have been crucial to the success of this event. The event is designed to include the whole family in activities for children, and to share community resources with families. Breakfast and snacks are served, there are games, performances, activities, opportunities to meet local officials, and local service agencies. Historically this event has served approximately 1000 people, and we are expecting similar turn out this year. All activities are held in Spanish, but it is not necessary to speak Spanish in order to volunteer.
