The mission of Child Development Incorporated is to provide childcare which encourages, enhances and reinforces the development of each child as a whole child, respecting each family's uniqueness.
Description:
Child Development Incorporated is a non-profit child care organization founded in 1965 which provides child care for primarily low socio-economic children ages 1-5. CDI operates two full time centers, 2012 Fisher Street and 412 South Baldwin Street as well as a drop-in center by contract with Dane County at the Job Center on Aberg Avenue. CDI's primary focus is to provide early childhood education which builds a framework for lifelong learning, individual success and good citizenship.
History:
In 1965, a group of citizens in Madison led by Juvenile Court Judge Ervin Bruner joined together to address the need for a more secure, beneficial early childhood experience for the siblings of young people Judge Bruner saw in his court room. Day Care, Inc. (now known as Child Development, Inc. or CDI) was organized to provide crucial early education to achieve this and serve low-income African-American households and other struggling families in Madison. In 1968 several community organizations joined together to purchase property on Fisher Street on Madison's southside and construct a dedicated educational facility. When the building opened in 1969, it was one of only two in Wisconsin state specifically designed for preschool aged children. Since 1969 CDI has had up to five centers in the Madison area serving young children. Currently there are two full day centers and one drop in center at the Job Center. The need for a beneficial early childhood experience in Madison that Judge Bruner saw in 1965 remains, and CDI continues to strive to address it.
