ASM (the Associated Students of Madison) is the official student body government of UW-Madison representing the needs of some 40,000+ students. ASM is a grassroots, volunteer and campaign driven organization that advocates for student issues and concerns on campus as well as at the state and national level.
Description:
ASM was brought about as a response to the Wisconsin Student Association, which was similar to ASM but lacked crucial features such as responsible checks and balances and a fiscally transparent accounting system. The WSA disbanded in 1993 and one year later ASM was founded with a similar mission but with a better framework to accomplish its goals. It's a good thing, too, because Wisconsin state law concerning shared governance requires that students have a voice in all student-life decisions!
History:
ASM is dedicated to one cause: maintaining and improving the quality of education and student life on campus. Past victories for ASM include securing Madison Metro bus passes for all students, posting professor course evaluations online, creating a 24 hour library, planning a Shadow Day for high school students from underrepresented groups, and implementing a textbook rental program.
